  Reid

Reid’s eyes opened, and he raised his head, attempting to work the crick out of his neck. Once again this summer, he found himself waking up with Maggie draped over his chest. He tried to prop himself up to a sitting position without waking her, but his movements must not have been as stealthy as he thought. She stirred under him and motioned to creep out of bed. His right arm grabbed her around the waist and pulled her back to him.

“Where do you think you’re going?” he asked. “After that strip tease act you pulled, why do you think I’m letting you out of my reach?”

“I was just thinking about moving somewhere a little more comfortable,” she said, looking into his eyes. “I know this is technically a stateroom and all, but I can’t imagine this bare mattress is as cozy as your bed,” she said.

“Maybe my bedroom’s not such a bad idea,” he said. “But it is kinda far away.” He kissed her shoulder and shifted them both so they were sitting up. He adjusted Maggie until she was in his lap with her legs and feet dangling over the edge of the platform. He chuckled.

  “What?” Maggie said. “What?”

  Reid laughed harder.

“What?” she demanded and playfully punched him on the side of his arm. “What is so funny?”

“The shoes,” he said, nodding toward her feet. “The shoes. I just noticed.”

She giggled. “I guess I got swept away, literally, when you picked me up, and forgot to take them off. They are my favorite shoes. Don’t poke fun. Comfortable.”

“They’re cute,” he said, staring at her feet, which were now crossed at the ankles. “But considering their trek through the storm, they could use a rest, or I have something completely different planned for them.” He winked at her.

  “And what’s that?” Maggie asked.

When she had appeared a few hours ago, her good girl act had tempted his primal side. All he wanted to do was pin her against the wall, but he knew she needed more than a quick five minutes in bed. Now was his chance.

“This.” Not giving her a moment to protest, he pulled Maggie from the bed, locked her legs around his hips, and moved toward the narrow hallway.

“Traction,” he growled in her ear, while planting each one of her feet on the wall on either side of his lower chest.

Reid smiled when he saw the realization spread across Maggie’s face of exactly how he wanted her to use her body. Maybe he should slow things down, but he wanted to bury himself in her, feel her tighten around him, until his mind was a white oblivion. He loved bringing out the wild side in her. She had done things he had never expected. He knew she was up for this.

  “Oh.” She closed her eyes.

She gripped her fingers around his neck and sank her hips down, sliding over his before rocking forward. Damn, it was incredible how she made him feel like he could explode right now.

“God, Maggie. Do that again.” Reid’s whole frame was rigid from bracing himself against the wall, but the way he was holding her against him shot strong pressure from his favorite angle. He loved wall sex.

“Like this?” she breathed in his ear as she lowered herself, tightening all her muscles around him.

“Yes. Do that—again.” He kissed along her neck. This was fucking amazing. He dug his fingers into the flesh of her bottom, and he saw the sensation taking her over the edge.

“Don’t stop.” He urged her on even though she was breathing heavily in his ear. He knew she was ready to fold in his arms. “I want to feel it.” He thrust away from the wall, gripping her lower back. God, she was so hot inside, like molten lava wrapping around him.

He didn’t know how much longer he could keep this going. Every time she rocked deeper, he felt consumed by the pressure building within him. He wanted to do this with her for the rest of the night. He could get lost in a girl like Maggie and never want to come up for air.

  “Reid…” she panted.

He couldn’t take it anymore. He spun away from the wall, slammed her back against the surface, and drove hard inside her. A blinding sensation surged through his body as he pulled back, spreading her thighs farther before plunging deeper with more intensity and force.

“God, Maggie.” He bit into her shoulder and felt her shatter all around him. His body tensed and went rigid as she pooled in his arms. He thrust into her one last time, surrendering to the release that was more consuming than the last time. His breath left his body and his legs wobbled for a second.

Using the wall for support, he slid until he and Maggie were on the floor. His body felt heavy and relaxed. He ran a finger along the smooth skin of her back.

“And that is the boat tour.” He laughed.

She nuzzled his shoulder, and carefully extricated her legs from around his waist. “Well, now that I’ve seen her, I give her my stamp of approval.”

  “Is that so?” Reid teased.

Maggie looked into his eyes and kissed him. “Yes, absolutely.”

“Wait, you brought cupcakes, didn’t you?” Reid’s eyes widened. He had just remembered there was something else besides the trench coat in her arms when she arrived.

“So, now you want the cupcakes?”

He nuzzled under her ear and kissed the open spot on her neck. “I do, but let’s not go anywhere for a while.” He wondered if he could push her for a third time. He’d never get tired of sex like that.

This rainy day was perfect. The cute girl who had just surprised the hell out of him curled around him and let her body relax against his chest. With his arms around her, there was no way she was stepping one foot off this yacht.

  Maggie

Maggie hummed as she sorted through a pile of clean laundry, searching for her favorite khaki shorts. With the garment in hand, she moved over to her half-packed suitcase sitting on the bed. She hated the thought of leaving the island, even if it was just for a few days. It had been a week since she’d shown up at Reid’s bo
athouse in her raincoat, and the pair hadn’t spent a night apart since.

She sighed and headed to the bathroom to collect her makeup and shampoo. Tonight would be her first night away from him, and he had been as reluctant to let her go as she had been to leave this morning.

Maggie traced her swollen lips with her finger, remembering their good-bye a few hours ago. However, this weekend trip to Charlotte was part of the summer bargain she’d struck with her parents. The Zeals weren’t crazy about their only child’s plan to house-sit on a tiny island at the opposite end of the state. They gave in with the condition that she would come home this weekend to celebrate her dad’s sixtieth birthday.

Maggie heard her phone buzz on the nightstand and headed back into the bedroom to retrieve it. The screen showed a new text message from Reid.

  Already miss you, tiger.

Miss you too, she quickly wrote back.

Travel safe flashed back in seconds.

Will let you know when I get there.

  You’d better.

Maggie giggled and could feel a huge grin spread across her face. How was she going to survive these next four days? She headed to her dresser to retrieve a tank top.

“What is that look on your face, G?” Blair crossed the threshold to her friend’s room and plopped down on the bed beside the suitcase.

“Oh, I was texting with Reid.”

“Texting with Reid?” the blonde mocked, batting her eyelashes. She laughed. “Didn’t he just drop you off, what? Two hours ago?”

“Stop teasing.” Maggie tossed a green T-shirt at her friend. “I’m really going to miss him this weekend, and I think he’ll miss me too.”

“I don’t want to say I told you so, but I told you so. The walk through the rain was all you two needed.” Blair placed the shirt in the suitcase.

“It has been an amazing week,” Maggie agreed, zipping up the luggage and setting it on the floor. She lowered herself to the bed beside her friend.

“I’m happy for you,” Blair said. “But I feel like I haven’t seen you in forever. This weekend really snuck up on me. I can’t believe it’s already time for you to head to Charlotte. When we got here in June, it seemed like the big birthday celebration was really far off—almost at the end of the summer.”

Maggie wasn’t sure, but she thought she might have detected a hint of sadness in her friend’s eyes.

“You’ll be ok on your own?” Maggie knew how Blair felt about spending too much time alone in the rambling old house. “Do you and Justyn have plans?”

“Yes, he’s taking me on a cruise tonight if the wind stays calm,” Blair answered. “Don’t worry. I don’t intend to be alone much while you’re gone.” The blonde winked. “Besides, I’m not entirely convinced we don’t have invisible roommates. Haven’t you heard all that random creaking at night?”

Maggie was glad to see the self-assured spark return to her friend’s demeanor. “Haven’t noticed the ghosts, if that’s what you mean, but I figured you’d be with Justyn. You have fun, girl. I’d better get this suitcase downstairs so I can be ready for my ride. My mother will kill me if I’m late to this shindig. She’s been planning it for a year.”

The pair headed to the stairs. “Who do you think will be there? I know my mom RSVPed right away. I’m sure she’s had her outfit ready for weeks.” Blair rolled her eyes.

“I’ll take detailed notes on everyone’s ensembles,” Maggie said. “I’m guessing it will be the usual Charlotte people—bankers, finance guys, a few NASCAR bigwigs. Nothing too exciting. But this is definitely going to be the right time to talk to Daddy about Reid and Justyn’s business. There should be plenty of people around with the capital to take on a new venture.”

Blair shot her friend a look. “I’m still not sure about getting involved in the guys’ business affairs,” she said. “They are pretty protective about the whole thing. Plus, do we want to mingle our parents’ work with our current life on the island?”

Maggie’s mind was set to help the guys, and she couldn’t be talked out of her plan now that it was so close to being set in motion.

“It’ll work out great,” she reassured Blair. “This really could boost our guys to the next level.”

They heard a horn honk from the gravel drive, and Blair held the front door open for her friend.

“Remember, don’t mention the investors meeting.” Maggie shoved her bag into the backseat of the car from the service she ordered from the mainland. The driver sat behind the wheel while the girls said their good-byes.

“I’m not going to mention a peep to Reid or Justyn. Don’t worry so much. They’re going to be thrilled when you come back with some high-dollar money for them. It’s going to be awesome.”

“Still. I want to keep it top secret for now. I don’t know what my dad’s going to say, or how Reid’s going to feel about the whole thing. I need to make sure it’s all worked out before we tell them.”

“Ok. Ok. Just go and tell your dad I said hello and happy birthday. Text me when you get there.”

Maggie hugged her friend then slipped into the tattered seat of the car. She was glad her father had insisted on paying for her quick trip home. The car service out of Beaufort was $200, and a roundtrip ticket from New Bern to Charlotte was $400. Her college funds had dwindled to nothing, and she couldn’t afford that kind of travel expense right now. It seemed a little ridiculous that a puddle jumper from one North Carolina town to another could be so pricey. As much as she was enjoying the summer, she couldn’t wait to start making her own steady income in the fall.

She waved good-bye to Blair as the car eased onto Island Road and toward the mainland. As much as Maggie was going to miss her friend and Reid, she couldn’t help but embrace the excitement that was building at the idea of taking the Strait cousins’ business to the next level. She was so sure everything would work out perfectly, just as the summer had.

  Three

  Justyn

Justyn listened to the waves lap the side of the boat. The water was calm tonight. Blair’s head was nestled against his chest and the softness of his T-shirt. Every time the boat rocked, she exhaled and he thought he could feel her heartbeat pulse against him. His hand was tucked in by her hip, giving him the feeling that everything between them was familiar. He always knew where to move so that their bodies fit together like smooth puzzle pieces. He caught the tail of a shooting star as the wisps of its light sliced through the coal-black sky.

She pushed against Justyn and sat up. “Maybe it’s time we get back to the marina.”

Justyn’s eyes were half-closed. He was stretched across the bow of his nameless boat and almost lulled into sleep by the low rocking. After painting all day with Reid, he was tired. But Maggie was still out of town, and there was no way he was going to turn down a night alone with Blair when they had the house to themselves.

“What time is it? I might have drifted off. Sorry.” He looked for his phone and then at his date. “You mad?”

“No. I’m not mad. It’s just late and maybe we should get back. You’re tired.” Blair sounded ticked to him.

Justyn eyed the pretty blonde. Something was off with her all of a sudden, but he had learned that part of being with Blair was accepting that the tide could change quickly.

“All right. Let me pull anchor and I’ll take you back.” He shoved his beer into the cup holder, and leaned over the bow to haul the rope and anchor onto the boat. He maneuvered around Blair, careful not to splash her. The stern anchor was much smaller and only took a few seconds to retrieve.

Justyn gave the cove one last look before turning the key and starting the engine. This was by far his favorite place on the sound, and it had become his special place to take Blair. It wasn’t just because it was the first place they had sex. There were moments when they were alone, and he could feel her shed all of the stress and tightness that she kept bottled up. He had discovered the softer side, the cute side that not everyone else saw.

&nbsp
; Like tonight, he had planned on cruising to the Dock House to hear the Fin Notes, but Blair had another idea.

“Can’t we just go to the cove, drop anchor, and float?” She had asked so sweetly that he knew then he would pretty much do anything she ever asked of him. Her eyes were full of mischief, but she kissed him on the cheek before letting him answer They had spent the night listening to music and floating under the stars. She continued to surprise him with her unexpected ideas.

It was hard to believe that in two weeks she would be gone. They didn’t talk about it. She never brought it up, and he definitely wasn’t going to mention the fact that the summer was almost over. They had an understanding.

The wind whipped through Blair’s hair as Justyn steered the watercraft along the shoreline. He couldn’t stop wondering what had made her request that he take her home. Before he had drifted off to an in-between sleep, he had felt her entire body relax into his, as if she belonged against him. It was harder to fight the feeling that he wanted her there next to him all the time. He had never known any girl the way he knew Blair. It had only been one summer, but everything was already completely different.

He took a swig of his beer as the engine slowed into the marina entrance. None of that mattered. Whatever his feelings were, they weren’t going to change the plans Blair had for her future, and he wasn’t about to change his.

“Let me help you. Hold on a second.” Justyn cut the engine and reached for the dock rope to secure the boat, but Blair was already five paces down the pier. “Blair, wait up!”

She spun around once, before taking off in a full sprint.

  “Blair!”

Her figure blended into the shadows as she ran farther from the marina.

“Dammit. What did I do now?” Justyn watched as Blair turned the corner of the island road and disappeared in the dark.
